OVERVIEW OF WATER QUALITY IN THE MYSTIC

The Mystic River Watershed is 76 square miles and contains 22 communities. A watershed is a land area defined by topography in which water flows from the highest point to the lowest point and contributes to a particular lake, river or other body of water - in this case, the Mystic River.Mystic River Watershed Association staff and trained volunteers have been collecting water quality data since 2000.

Water quality in the Mystic River Watershed is comparable to many other urbanized watersheds where dense development on land is contributing pollutants to the water. The data tell us that the water is clean enough to safely boat in the Mystic Lakes and River more than 90% of the time. But many areas of the watershed do not support swimming, boating or fishing as required by the Clean Water Act due to high levels of bacteria.
